Detils about the project
We all work with youth in the cities. Young people in urban areas might face some of the
challenges such as bad housing: high rise building blocks, dilapidated buildings,
overcrowded areas, vandalism, challenging social network: 'wrong' friends, overcrowdedness,
intolerance between different cultural groups, lack of leisure time offer:
limited access to youth activities, no-bad-expensive sport infrastructure, reluctance of
youth workers to work in difficult areas, poor economic situation: one parent families,
unemployment, little money but lots of wanting, illegal income, feeling of insecurity: higher
crime rate, anti-social behavior, gangs, prostitution, vandalism, drug and alcohol abuse: to
be part of the group, survival mechanisms (SALTO Inclusion Resource Centre).
Youth work and youth activism might help young people deal with problems they face in
everyday life. On the other hand youth workers face challenges in their work and
sometimes need little help from other experience activists. We would like to invite You to
participate in our new project “Youth and the city” which aims to bring together youth
activists and leaders who work with young people in big European cities. Our goal is to
share methods and tools of urban youth work, create new methodologies and exchange
project ideas.
During the training we will analyze needs, problems and opportunities specific for the
youth living in urban areas, exchange our experiences and discover diversity of the urban
youth projects. We will create online catalog of case studies and design new projects
based on our experiences. The participants will also have an opportunity to visit urban
youth projects implemented in Warsaw. Training course will be organized in a
participatory approach; we will use active methods of learning and teaching, case studies
and benchmarking of projects.
Results of the project will be:
o empowerment of youth workers from European cities,
o network of youth workers and organizations,
o on-line catalog of case studies of projects from different countries,
o drafts of new international urban youth projects.
