Project
Nuestra Tierra is a non-profit organization from Puerto Vallarta. It elaborates and helps projects giving service and benefit to the community and nature resources. The aim is the search of a regional and national community development, and this in social and ecological matters. The Voluntary Service Section of the association provides a considerable part of its action, power, and energy.
In Mexico, marine turtles have played an important role in the economic development of some towns of the coast. However, their exploitation has placed them at the present time among species in danger of extinction. The country has got a strategic position for this resource, and is very important to protect them.
Activities:
The high season from June to December, a sharp number of turtles come to the beaches of Puerto Vallarta to put their eggs in the sand, so that 45 days later, the baby turtles could be born and liberated into the sea.
It is important to say that it is a hard and exhausting work, but you have to know it in advance. It consists in:
• Patrolling once per night along the beaches of the area and watching where the marine turtles go and make their nests during the night. This is sometimes done under rainstorms and/or under high temperatures with a huge presence of mosquitoes.
• Constructing the turtles nesting area which has been damaged during the winter period and the big tides.
• Watching over the camp
• Making an inventory of the existing material as to put in order the camp.
• Cleaning the beach and the estuary
Fee:
As Nuestra Tierra is a non-governmental and a non-profit association, your contribution will be used to fund the projects of the association, $3,000 pesos (about $285 USD, or 230 euros) are requested to the volunteers. It must be paid on arrival.
